He is AFX, the most exalted genius, Richard D. James. The king of electronic dance (and not so dance) music, will now grace the pages of this blog if only because I find that so few people these days really know much about this man or his music. An entire history of the Aphex Twin’s music would take many posts itself so I’ll confine myself to speaking about simple 1 part of a release, from 1 album, made up of 2 parts.

This was a very limited release on vinyl (apx. 1000 copies) in 1997 and due to the amazing underground popularity of Mr. James, they disappeared so fast that many didnt even realize the record had been released. This record can no longer be purchased new and thus will not make RDJ any additional money, so I dont feel bad posting this to share with others. But RDJ/Rephlex if you want these links removed please contact me.

AFX – Hangable Auto Bulb EP 1

The style of this record does follow and shape the style that Luke Vibert and other Cornwall producers had begun in the mid-90s, with heavily reprogrammed breakbeats, intense snare rushes and unorthodox use of midi programming to create stuttering, stretching and glitching effects long before they were so easily created by VSTs and Procedural song creation. Pay special attention to the jungle/dnb influences that came out of the amazing programming featured on this record as well as many Aphex records following it.
If you have any interest in EDM production then listen to this record over and over! There is so much to learn! Particularly from the lead track Laughable Butane Bob and (do you see the anagrams yet?) the title track Hangable Auto Bulb. When you witness the frenetic percussion rolls from old breaks it will force you to realize that current Glitch Hop and other rhythm oriented genres still have quite a ways to go before “going too far”. Aphex’s snare rushes at times take a percussion instrument from one shot to varied tone in short order. Layering mind bending drums over laid back, floating and at times hauntingly simple melodies and harmonies, is what drew many to this sound originally. The fact that much of the tonal content is played with less than aggressive synths, creates a contrast between aggression, impatience, longing and memory that can scarcely be described.

My displeasure is rife. I am unable to update due to tons of crap that is stopping me from updating. How do you like that for redundant?
In the mean time and to hold you over. take a look at MDA’s vst effects for OSX and PC!
I in particular love the subsynth plugin. This is an amazing sub synth enhancer for making drumloops, basses and generally anything deep, MORE BOOMY! I’ll be releasing a short video on how to more effectively use this plugin shortly, but until then play around with the key osc setting and see how much jungle or dancehall you can make!
Other notable plugins from MDA are Tracker (it follows the audio it is fed with either an oscillator or an EQ) which is great fun to sing into and their beautiful thru-zero flanger for those Phil Spector type tape flanging effects.
Learn to love GOOD free VSTs. And these are some of the best!

Ben Samples, Boy Meets Club and Cory O played a loud and engery filled show last night at Branx in good ol rainy PDX. It may have been stormy and shitty outside but that didnt stop the party inside, especially as Ben Samples took the stage! Ben attacked the crowd with energy and agility pounding out live remixes of heavy club rattling hip hop (dare you say glitch hop?) and raging synthetic bass. But this was only after openers Boy Meets Club prepared the dance floor with a thumping set of original remixes by the Boys themselves and yours truely, as well as some hits dug deep from the annals of electronic mayhem! We were even blessed with a rare special appearance by Half Man Half who came through to drop a verse during the set!

Thanks to Cory O I was able to get some good footage not only of Ben’s remixing but also of home town heros Boy Meets Club, Half Man Half and Cory! Thanks again Cory!!
